Marathon de Vienne annulé 😢
ASMN06/03/2020 @ 14:24
Dear runners! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️⭐️
Dear friends of the Vienna City Marathon!

The Vienna City Marathon (VCM) on 18 and 19 April 2020 will certainly take place, unless the relevant authorities decide otherwise.

"Although Covid-19 also affects the organization of the VCM, we are working on the preparation in every respect. In doing so, we are responsibly following the recommendations of the Austrian Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO) on the holding of major events," explains Wolfgang Konrad, Race Director of the Vienna City Marathon.

We have great respect for the marathon organisers in Rome (planned date was 29 March) and Paris (5 April), who had to announce the difficult decision to cancel the event due to the respective national official requirements.

In contrast to Italy, France or Switzerland, the responsible authorities in Austria explicitly did not ban any events at the moment. The current guidelines in Austria as well as in other countries allow the holding of events, which is also happening on an ongoing basis.

On 28 February, the Vienna Regional Directorate of Public Health announced that there are currently "no official measures to restrict events of any kind". This was confirmed by a spokesman for Vienna's Health and Sports City Councillor Peter Hacker on 5 March. "There are currently no medical or epidemic reasons to cancel events", Vienna's Tourism Director Norbert Kettner also emphasised in the media.

"Covid-19 will bring adaptations for the planning of the Vienna City Marathon. In cooperation with experts, we will evaluate all parts of the event with regard to possible risks and take steps for possible measures", said Gerhard Wehr, CEO of the Vienna City Marathon.

In the risk assessment carried out according to the current model of the Austrian Ministry of Health, the Vienna City Marathon achieves the lowest and therefore best rating level. "Important reasons for this are its character as an open-air event with participants who are fit, healthy and mostly under 60 years of age, as well as a comprehensive health and safety concept that has been tried and tested for years and now also integrates measures for Covid-19," says Dr. Robert Fritz, Head of the VCM Medical Centre.

Everyone is aware that the situation is evolving. Numerous other major events are taking place in Austria ahead of the VCM. We are working closely with authorities, experts and other event organizers to coordinate and communicate the relevant information to participants and visitors.

We are working hard to achieve one goal: a successful Vienna City Marathon on April 18 and 19, 2020.

Should there be new information, we will inform you immediately on our channels.
